This month, we select our favourite opening scenes, in "Annnd Action!"
Batman Arkham Asylum
When Batman escorts joker into the asylum to be locked up. The whole walking him through the cells and different wings gets built up with tension as inmates heckle and threaten Batman. Its all culminating to the meeting the massive beast that is Croc who threatens Batman too, until he's brought down by a shockcollar at the last minute. You proceed up in the lift with two guards and joker strapped to a chair, then bam off go the lights. In the darkness you hear commotion and when the lights come back you see Batman holding joker by the throat so he can't go anywhere. That was a great bit of scripting.
Climbing through the train and that opening shot of snow with the town high in the Tibet mountains. Pretty much sets the scene for the next 10 hours of gameplay.
Approaching the USG Ishimura in Dead Space's opening is probably my first and most awe-inspiring PS3 experience. I'd never seen that kind of visual spectacle in a game before, seeing a huge star through the cockpit window and the silhouette of the Ishimura coming into view. So bright. Then 10 hours of fear and darkness. Lovely.
Metal Gear Solid
The submarine intro, it was so cinematic with the music and voice acting. It let me know that games had just gone to a whole new level instantly had my attention and ensured I was in for life.
Mass Effect 2
Seeing the Normandy blown to pieces after coming to love it and the crew in ME1 was gut wrenching to play.
Final Fantasy X
The blitzball game with Tidus dominating, Auron entering the city of Zanarkand, Sin beginning its attack all with Rammstein rocking in the background my god it was awesome.
Assassins Creed II
One of the best intros I have ever experienced. It sets the mood for the entire game that follows, builds up your emotions and actually sticks in your head until Ezio's departure from the series.
Zarmena J Khan
The intro was fantastic! The suspense of the whole thing is just overwhelming and the first time you see that splicer from inside the bathysphere is terrifying. Really sets the bar high for the whole game.
