bulletstorm

Developer: Epic Games/People can fly.
Publisher: EA
Release Date: 25/02/2011
Format: PS3/XBOX360/PC
Not quite sure where to start with this onstrosity of a game. It’s so cool its bad and so old school it’s new! Bulletstrom does not conform it today’s standard of shooters and has drawn its inspiration from games a decade ago. But in doing so, it is literally mocking what we all have come to expect from games today. It makes Bulletstorm stand out from everything else, totally disregard to a storyline, with more plot holes than a slice of Swiss cheese. This brings me to another aspect of said game, its cheesiness. Don’t get me wrong, I have not found a single person who does not like Bulletstorm, it’s just THAT awesome.
“Kill with Skill” is the slogan that accompanied the title, referring to the mass number of skill-shot to earn is this game. You’re not just killing the bad guys, but having fun in the way you do it. Kick them off skyscrapers; throw them into exposed reinforced concrete or into electrified objects. The possibilities are almost endless and never stop being fun. As you try and link them all together to find another skill-shot you haven’t unlocked. All this becomes possible once you’ve found the Energy leash, able to whip people towards you or into dangerous objects to splatter them to pieces. Combined with the melee kick, matrix style slow motion bullet time and an armoury of strange and devastating weapons, the skill-shot list is well into the hundreds.

Weapons are another great addiction to the game, each bringing something different to the game. The only problem is you can only holster three at a time. From the Peacemaker Carbine to Boneduster and Flailgun. Each offer secondary fire, which completely change the nature of the gun. Sniper bullets you are able to steer, bouncing grenades and a pistol that fires fireworks. It sounds like the developers should belong in the Looney-bin, but it all adds to the atmosphere and uniqueness of
the game.
The characters are the stereotyped, but taken to another level. Your character is hell bent on revenge, (explained in the game), you partner is taken over by an AI and now half cyborg saying mad things throughout the game. And the damsel in distress, that isn’t. And is in fact angrier that the pair of you put together. The enemies you face and even stranger, from normal berserkers, to giant man eating plants to super human special ops Echo teams. But none of this matter, as you happily splat them into a huge fly-trap and stick fireworks to his friends as the screen shakes because you have just drunk some moonshine.

Bulletstorm never gets dull, yes, the story is faulty, yes the characters are stupid and yes the game is more of a Duke Nuke’em cast off and never
takes itself seriously. But by god, it’s one of the most enjoyable games of this decade. Only fault is the lack of online modes to continue the fun. Sadly, the game ended wide open for a sequel that looks like it will never come. Bullestorm is all about enjoying the game, that’s all the developers wanted and they nailed it. In a world of fishy shooters and everyone taking everything too seriously. A fresh, new look to the genre of FPS they gave us and we’ll never forget it.
