Saints Row 4

Developer: Volition
Publisher: Deep Sliver
Release Date: 23/08/2013
Format: PS3/XBOX360/PC
Since its debut the Saints Row franchise has been the most insane, comical and completely over the top saga in the history of gaming. What some originally saw as nothing more than a GTA clone has become one of the most popular and unique titles. The one thing that was on every Saints Row fans mind was, what else could be done to make the franchise mad as ever. Saints Row IV is almost a completely different type of proper-world game, there are still plenty of absurd weapons, costumes and activities, but the way you interact with the world has changed. No longer are you an ordinary earthbound mortal, Saints Row IV turns you into a superhero, capable of running up the sides of buildings and flinging people with your mind. There are eight superpowers in all, each of which can be upgraded by collecting and spending data cores which are scattered across Steelport and the game gives you plenty of opportunities to use them throughout.
What's Saints Row IV reason for receiving superpowers, its simple. You saved the world from a terrorist threat and became the president of the United States. However the excitement of being president did not last when Earth was invaded by aliens, and the evil overlord had you placed in a simulation, this is where you play most of the game acquiring more abilities to help fight the aliens. The simulation is a virtual re-creation of the city Steelport, that the evil alien overlord, Zinyak has remodelled a bit. This is where you play the missions, activity and customizing your character.
Saints Row IV has now added weapons customizable to the game giving your more customizing choices, which means you can now make your assault rifle pink polka-dotted just to match your character pink girl outfit. Saints Row 4 still adds the customizing of your character which you could change the appearance and personality of the Saints leader is completely up to you, thanks to a brilliantly powerful character editor. You can make him or her look genuinely cool, or a completely crazy, as your creation appears in cut-scenes, which are all rendered in-game. If you get bored with your look, or even your sex, visit a plastic surgeon in the city and change it. If you want a new outfit, there are shops full of every type of fashion imaginable, as well as ludicrous costumes. This gives you a great feeling of ownership and your character will be completely different to anyone else's.

Saints Row IV has a few negatives in the game such as cars, for me Saints Row was a game that involved driving, listening to the radio and exploring the city of Steelports. Now with the added superpowers cars are wasted option. You can steal them, paint them and upgrade them, but who want to drive at 40mph when you can run at 80mph. Another negative point in the game are side missions and activities. Main part of the game involves rescuing members of your crew from Zinyaks evil simulation, and when rescued you can interact with the crew, this is where you receive side missions. How do your crew want to spend time after being rescued, well blowing stuff up and killing aliens over and over and over. I found this a disappointment in the game, however you do get upgrades for weapons or superpowers but for me I like to do the side missions first and was tasked of completing the same activity a lot of times. These are my personal negatives and just made my opinion a little less.
All that aside and Saints Row IV is looking better than ever, the trademark humour is there, delivering some hilarious one liners and some genuinely funny dialogue. Saints Row missions are varied and exciting to play, with the game giving more than enough surprises in the game's story missions to keep you entertained, and as in previous games, you can increase the mayhem by inviting a friend along to do missions and other activities. The absurd humour that infuses every aspect of this game gives it an identity all its own. The simulated city of Steelport doesn't offer deep gameplay or the most satisfying challenge, but it is a great place to mess around and just have fun.

second opinions
Playing GTAV has reinforced my utter disappointment with Saints Row 4. I really enjoyed 3 but 4 is basically exactly the same game but with supper powers, aliens and a few new weapons, it just feels like one big DLC. I'm so disappointed with it that I don't really feel like completing it to be honest. The only fun I had on it was playing with others online but that's it.
I'd give it 5/10. May be harsh as I've not finished but I don't think it's worth the slog. Andrew P Paschails |
