Although I now only own a PS3, I have had my time with the various Microsoft machines and have seen their strengths and weakness over Sony's PlayStation over the years. So im I the right guy to say that either console is better than the other? Well no, but I can offer my advice and its up to you to listen or ignore what I have to say.
YES, both machines are ten times more powerful than their predesesors, offer epic graphics that almost appear almost life like and wish to interact with us in ways never before considered for a device built for computer games. But that's the point, neither the PS4 or XBOX1 can be considered gaming consoles anymore, they are more accurately described as PC's geared towards gaming. At their time of realise, late 2013. The PS4 and XBOX1 will rival todays top end PCs for graphics and raw power. Yes, I said that correct, 'todays' PC's. In truth the next generation console has been ready, software wise for the last 2 years at least. They must have so game developers can create games ready for day1. So the tech behind them is old before its even released, sounds about right for technology today.
Im getting off subject. It terms of power, PS4 has more than XBOX1. but don't let that alone persuade you. PS3 was more powerful than the 360, but the 360 was able to use it better and out sold PS3. So, games? well chances are you've already decided which company has your favourite titles. If you like Forza and Halo, you have a XBOX. If you enjoy the company of Drake and Katos chances are you opted with Sony for the last few years. Both company's have their claws in motion tech. Microsoft have embraced the Kinect far better than Sony and their Move. And both look to use it for the future whether the gamers want to or not. The PS4 will bring to the table a long over due improved PS Eye, able to track you and the ball of light far better, like the Kinect.
So both machines and company's are even in my book. But now is where it gets interesting. Sony wish to utilize their powerful hand held Vita. With talk of cross-play, buy and save. The talk is that all PS4 titles MUST be compatible with the Vita, either remote play or Cross-save. And talk of using the Vita as a second controller/tablet like the Wii U. If both these statements are true, the PS4 on paper has the best of both its rivals. XBOX1 is looking at the Kinect to keep them going, their conference had the guy waving his arms like he had an obsession with Minority Report. He also show-cased the voice activation, switching the XBOX1 on and off and switching between movies, internet and gaming seamlessly and quickly. Great for the lazy human race we are all becoming.
Sony's conference only showed the brand new controller. Same as the old one with a touch pad and proper triggers like with the XBOX one. Triggers, YES, touch pad??? Ive been able to get my hand on a Vita and I cant say the front and rear touchpads/screens have changed my experience of gaming. Most if all controls mapped to the touchpads are mapped to buttons or triggers aswell and I find using them much easier and simpler. I fear it will become a gimmick like the six-axis they are trying to bring back aswell.!
So far, its looking the future is sharping up nicely. However, I now bring you all crashing back to earth. Sony is giving us the Share button, able to link our system with Facebook, YouTube and any other social media you choose. Also to allow friends to watch and take over our console if we get stuck on a level. XBOX1 has the debatable 'always-on' and requires a constant connection to the internet. TV's are now being sold with cameras, able to track and recognise faces and people. Im sorry, but I don't want a camera watching me and my kids whether the TV is on or not. I'm hearing on the news that hackers are now able to read your Gas and Electric monitors, (why they would to know how much energy I use is beyond me) but its proof that nothing is hacker free. The PS network two years ago. XBOXLIVE a few months back. What is to stop someone taking over my PS4. Who will rest in their bed with the XBOX1 watching their every move day or night. Not knowing if any is watch on the other end. The future they call it. they may be right and I may be an old git, scared of what the future my bring. Im go off past events and what IS possible. ANYTHING connected to ANYTHING can be hacked or have virus's planet on it.
Im not trying to scare you, well maybe I am. I just want people to realise what they are buying when these brand new machines come onto the market. Hopefully at E3 Microsoft and Sony can give us assurances that's these things are not possible. And I can sleep happy in that knowledge. Both machines look promising and have strengths over the other. Me personally am not temped by Microsoft and waving at the console to operate it. I'm looking forward to using my Vita to enhance my PS4.
